Football Facts

A player in English Premiere League football only has the ball for ~3% - 8% (depending on position, formation, teams style of play & opposition) during an entire 90 minute game.

Therefore, the following could be considered 3 fundamental determinants for personal success in pyramid football:

✓ How you affect the game when your opponents have the ball
✓ How you affect the game when your team has the ball
✓ What you do with the ball when you rarely have it

Of course there are countless other factors that determine individual success in football.

A few examples include physiological:

  • Muscle composition
  • Height
  • Weight

Psychological:

  • Core values
  • Beliefs
  • Motivation

Put simply, genetics, epigenetics, core values, motivation, aerobic & anaerobic capacities coupled with technical/tactical abilities will determine which level a Child will play, if/when they progress to pyramid football.

Aerobic endurance accounts for almost ¾ of a match however; it’s the explosive anaerobic components that usually decide the outcome of a match. A strong aerobic foundation is imperative for maximising anaerobic enhancements.

A 90 minutes game at any level consists of:

(~70%) - Aerobic endurance

✓ VO2max

(~30%) - Anaerobic Power:

✓ Max speed
✓ Repeat sprint ability
✓ Agility
✓ Accelerating
✓ Decelerating
✓ Jumping
✓ Heading
✓ Tackling
✓ Shooting
✓ Passing
✓ Crossing

Different positions & formations within a team require players to obtain higher levels of certain physiological capacities compared to other players playing in other positions & formation’s.

Match intensities are generally categorised into 5 different thresholds to make up the total distance covered during a game:

✓ Walking
✓ Jogging
✓ Running (distance covered <5.5m/sec - 19.8km/h)
✓ High speed running (>5.5m/sec -19.8km/h)
✓ Sprinting (>6.6m/sec – 23.7km/h)
  • At all levels, goalkeepers cover the least ground during a game compared to all other positions.
  • At elite level, central midfielders cover the greatest total distance with centre backs covering the least during a match.
  • External players cover the greatest sprint distances with forwards covering slightly less distances but more than central midfielders & centre backs.
  • External players produce the longest sprints averaging ~40m
  • All other positions average ~10m-20m sprint distance.
  • Forwards & external players complete the most accelerations & decelerations during a game.

Premiere League players’ high speed running distance has increased a 3rd during games compared to a decade ago. Strength & conditioning in football has also increased significantly over the last few decades to prepare players for the increased demands of matches & training.

Strength work is beneficial for anyone who can follow instructions with an ever-growing body of evidence suggesting it’s safe for children.

The essentials for a footballer in the 20th century were:

✓ Boots for 2 different playing surfaces
✓ Pads
✓ Tie-ups
✓ Towel
✓ Wash bag
✓ Flip flops

21st century football essentials are all of the above plus:

✓ 3rd pair of boots for artificial surfaces
✓ Resistance/Therabands
✓ Foam roller
✓ Gym membership or weights bench & free weights
✓ Heart rate monitor
✓ GPS tracker

The people who succeed in life are usually the people who do the groundwork first by educating themselves to align with their ultimate targets & goals. For instance, if you want to be a professional athlete but don’t train & recover like one, what are the chances you’ll become one if given the chance?

Yes, the power of visualisations & meditations with a very positive mind set will work with the universe & manifest synchronicities for you. By placing you in situations that lead you to experiences achieving your targets & goals.

However, if you’re not primed to deal with that environment, your mind & body will likely react in an adverse way when immersed in whatever it is you desire.

Therefore, the key to success is to:

  • Align your core values & beliefs with that of your wishes & desires or vise versa
  • Do the groundwork (reading up setting the foundations) & the little steps necessary.
  • Then it’s just a matter of time before you experience your desires & know how to make them last.
